Many people do not realise that Suriname, too, suffered a great deal in World War II. The wreck of the German merchant ship Goslar in the Suriname River is still silent evidence of WW II. The country was directly threatened by attacks on its bauxite mines, food was rationed and at least five thousand Surinamese fought under the Dutch flag, protecting targets in Suriname. At the time, Suriname provided for over sixty percent of the global bauxite production, which made the country of great strategic interest to the United States. American planes were built with bauxite from Suriname. Director Ramdjan Abdoelrahman incorporates witness accounts by war veterans, alternated with stories by people who experienced the war in other ways, places of special historic interest and archive footage.
