Scents play an important role in our emotions, memories and behaviour. For this reason, many companies want to use the emotional power of odour. But what is smell exactly and how does it work? Animals can often smell better than humans. Pigs, for example, have a strongly developed perceptive system to sense a specific class of scents: pheromones. People react to pheromones, too. At the University of Utah in the US, the VNO (vomeronasal organ), or pheromone sense, has been extensively examined.
