A moustache, Emma Blank demands from her butler Haneveld. 'So you will attain some authority.' Emma Blank is particular, insistent and moody towards her ever-subservient staff - apart from Haneveld consisting of room maid Gonny, cook Bella and handyman Meier. They support her while she waits for her quickly approaching end, in the black country cottage that sticks out of the dune landscape like a tombstone. And when madam does not watch, Haneveld hits the sack with Bella and Meier is chasing Gonny. Her dog Theo is the only one meeting with her approval: at least, he meekly does what she asks of him. The fact that Theo is played by director/screenwriter Alex van Warmerdam himself, dressed in a clean shirt and always wearing sunglasses and looking stoical, says everything about this black-humour tale. Clever dialogues and slapstick-like visual jokes take turns, while slowly but surely it turns out that nothing in Emma Blank's remote cottage is what it seems at first glance.
