How do you get used to a new class, a new language and a teacher you don’t understand? The new batch of refugee children that Miss Kiet takes under her wing gradually gains confidence.
Kiet Engels is a teacher you would wish for every child. She is strict but never harsh, loving but never weak. Her patience is endless and she manages to engage even the most unmotivated pupils. The children in her class have only just arrived in the Netherlands and have often experienced a distressing time of war and misery. In a purely observing style - without comment or interviews - the makers follow four pupils of different nationalities and ages for a year. The film is told purely from their perspective.
