The title refers to the means of transportation with which the class of Onnoval goes on a school trip. Not your average day out, because the expedition originated from eleven-year-old Onnoval's fantasy. He is pestered at school - especially by Gino - because of his looks, his horror stories and his wistful attitude. He gets a chance to take revenge when he is visited by the diabolical writer Ferluci. De griezelbus is convincingly creepy, owing to the extraordinary special effects, the blood-curdling music by Paleis van Boem and the acting by for instance Willem Nijholt, playing the cruel Count Vlapono.
