They have existed for almost twenty-five years now, the band The Directors, consisting mainly of Dutch filmmakers like Ate de Jong, Dick Maas, Huub Stapel and Esmé Lammers, plus singer Monique Kleman. On the occasion of this anniversary - they're all a little older and greyer, but still successful - they record a new song. The Directors is a documentary about friendship, antipodal personalities, growing older, ambitions and illusions. Time has been generous to the band members. Nobody has passed away and everybody has or has had success. The camera follows them during the studio rehearsals for the recording and their daily worries. Anecdotes and archive footage provide an adequate and at times hilarious retrospective of their lives. And then there is the double layer of the documentary itself, for which the makers fail to find funding, it seems, like most of them have always had problems getting their films financed.
