Authentic short films from family archives present an image of the daily lives of colonials in the Netherlands East Indies during the 1930s, of how they ran their households. Like true extras, they pass in the background: the kokkie, baboe, washing lady and costermonger. By means of excerpts from letters from those years, the relationships are also illustrated in words: 'People lack civilisation here, but this is compensated by a lot of comfort.'
