In this road movie, the East European Olive is a charming con woman who has lied and cheated all her life. She has regularly had to flee with her eleven-year-old son Bobby. In an attempt to leave her criminal past behind, she tries to build up a new life with Bobby in the religious state of Oklahoma. Bobby and Olive manage to beguile everybody into dancing to their tune. Things go wrong when Olive tries to rip off the insurance company and she is arrested. During her stay in prison, she has to learn to realise she can only give Bobby a better life if she can temporarily let him go.
The tragicomedy Bringing Up Bobby is the directing debut of Famke Janssen, who also wrote the screenplay.
