In 1953, three young women stand at the threshold of a new life in the distant country of New Zealand, where their fiancées are awaiting their arrival. During the flight from London to their new homeland, Esther, Marjorie and Ada meet the attractive and ambitious Frank. All three of them fall for the charms of this unattached man, who is quite a different type of man than their future husbands. Still, they stick to their original plans. The drama really starts to build up when the women go their separate ways in New Zealand. Ada and her religious husband leave for a dark bunker house where she tries to ignore her feelings of doubt and guilt. Esther liberates herself and starts a career as a fashion designer, while Marjorie wants to realise her dream of a large family. Frank finds a local partner and begins laying out his dream vineyard. The emigration seems successful, but fate soon brings the four together again, in a bittersweet way that will forever change their lives.
