In this documentary, Haanstra observes human behaviour in animals and animal behaviour in humans, searching for clues that could be applied as an explanation for the latter group's social (mis)behaviour. By capturing the behavioural patterns of animals on film, Haanstra holds up a mirror to the spectator. After patiently waiting in lodges for weeks for the right moment, he managed to collect the most amazing images. Bij de beesten af was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary in 1973.
