Having escaped death during the Salvadorian civil war, four men and their families end up in Almere, where they try to reconcile their dreams and nightmares with reality.
El Salvador, 1975. People are brutally oppressed by the government. Men who set up a union are apprehended and tortured. Four Dutch journalists manage to enter a prison and interview union members. But when the reporters leave the building, they are shot and killed. The union members later flee to the Netherlands, where they and their families end up in the new city of Almere. While their children and grandchildren grow up in the Netherlands, they keep dreaming, while nightmares of El Salvador fill their heads.
