Feature-film début by Irma Achten about a woman who tries to escape the social straitjacket of her time. The rebellious Belle van Levert, daughter of a textile magnate, hates everything involved with money and power. Her greatest desire is to be a poet. When she breaks with her parents, she is forced to take a job leaving her little time for poetry. As she grows older, wealthy and married, she realises that she has become someone she couldn't have respected as a child. At several crucial moments in her life, Belle meets The Man, who attaches enormous power to desire. For Belle, who keeps seeing her desires shattered, these meetings do not remain without consequences.
