Writer Anil Ramdas leaves the Dutch nation totally bewildered after his self-chosen death in 2012. Even his best friends had not seen his abrupt end coming. How did he come to this?
Who was Anil Ramdas? It is the story of an immigrant from Suriname who grew to become an icon of the Dutch intelligentsia, but it ended in isolation and his self-chosen death. This is also the story of the zeitgeist in the Netherlands, so unrecognisably changed since the 1970s. TV fragments show that what Ramdas (1958-2012) said at the time about populism, colonialism and migration is still relevant and pertinent today. He himself got entangled in an inner conflict. Friends, colleagues and family members reconstruct his tragic fate. This raises the question: In what kind of country am I actually living?
