Progressive industrial and graphic designer Piet Zwart lived to renew. He acquired a reputation through his designs for Bruynzeel, the Nederlandse Kabelfabriek and PTT, and his pioneering work in the field of typography. This film portrait revives his work through animations, photographs and unique archive footage, such as a promotional film from 1928 in which he personally appears. The film pays attention to his collaboration with architect Berlage, who designed the building of The First Church of Christ Scientist, for which Piet Zwart designed the interior and organ. Through interviews with his children, excerpts from personal letters and voice-overs by Jacob Derwig and Gijs Scholten van Aschat, the film draws a picture of a passionate designer, who occasionally ran into the conservative spirit of Dutch society.
