11 november, Saint Petersburg is one of the Video Diaries that were made on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. At first, director Nathalie Alonso Casale wanted to shoot in Rotterdam, but eventually she chose Saint Petersburg for its remarkable light. She draws an impressionistic portrait of a day in the Russian port by the Baltic Sea, from the early morning till late at night. She observes life in the streets quietly and from a distance, like a passer-by. Whether she films elderly people waiting on a bench, three ladies in a row praying beside a wall or a young skater in a halfpipe. Without any comment, with a soundtrack of wind and background noises.
