Filmmaker John Appel infiltreerde in het Italiaanse Siena tijdens de voorbereidingen op de jaarlijkse Palio. Die spectaculaire paardenrace wordt sinds de Middeleeuwen op het beroemde ronde plein gehouden. Er is sindsdien weinig veranderd: zonder zadel racen tien jockey's negentig seconden lang met doodsverachting rond, toegejuicht door duizenden dicht opeengepakte, verhitte toeschouwers. In de steegjes van de verschillende, elkaar zwaar beconcurrerende wijken volgt men gespannen de wedstrijd op televisie. De eigen wijk moet winnen, met een paard dat per lot is toegewezen. In Civetta, de wijk die sinds 1979 geen Palio meer won, volgde Appel van dichtbij enkele hoofdpersonen, de koortsachtige voorbereidingen en het onderlinge gesmoes, met tot slot natuurlijk op het plein de overweldigende race zelf, alsof de Middeleeuwen niet voorbij zijn.
