Focus on Turkey
Every year, the HFM spotlights the audiovisual industry of one of our European neighbours, looking to intensify co-production activity between Dutch producers and their counterparts from that country. Following the successful evaluation of the Nordic industries in 2011, the HFM will put the spotlight on candidate EU member Turkey in 2012.
SIGHT & SOUND CINEMA MILITANS LECTURE
For the annual Sight & Sound Cinema Militans lecture, a high-profile luminary of international cinema is invited to articulate his or her vision of the future of cinema.
The fixed theme of the lecture, ‘the position and viability of cinema in the present age’, was lifted from 'Cinema Militans', an essay on the nature of film penned by Dutch film theoretician and critic Menno ter Braak in 1929.
In 2010, the Cinema Militans address was given by leading U.S. independent producer Christine Vachon. Vachon, together with partner Pamela Koffler, founded the innovative production company Killer Films in 1995. Since then, the duo has produced a series of daring, highly entertaining and intellectually challenging films, working with the cream of independent directorial talent, including Todd Haynes (FAR FROM HEAVEN, VELVET GOLDMINE), Larry Clark (KIDS) and Helen Hunt (THEN SHE FOUND ME).
This year, the Sight & Sound Cinema Militans Lecture will be delivered by Semih Kaplanoglu.
Born in Izmir in 1963, Semih Kaplanoglu has published a number of articles on plastic arts and cinema. He worked in advertising and for television, before directing his first film, HERKES KENDI EVINDE (AWAY FROM HOME), which premiered at the Istanbul International Film Festival in 2001. BAL is the third part of a trilogy dealing, in reverse order, with key moments in the life of the poet Yusuf. In the first film, YUMURTA (EGG, 2007), he returns to his native village for the first time in many years following his mother’s death. In SÜT (MILK, 2008), we meet Yusuf as an ambitious highschool graduate trapped in a remote village that provides little opportunity for him to follow his great love: writing. Finally, in BAL (2010), we discover the traumatic events that marked his childhood.
BINGER-SCREEN INTERNATIONAL INTERVIEW
During the Binger-Screen International Interview, an accomplished industry figure will talk about his or her life and work, and share his or her views on contemporary filmmaking. This year Screen International editor Wendy Mitchell will interview Flemish scriptwriter and director Michaël R. Roskam (BULLHEAD, 2011)
Last year, Screen International editor Mike Goodridge interviewed the visionary and highly influential cinematographer Christopher Doyle (HERO, IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, 2046).
