Two Loves

Portrait of Lord Alfred Douglas, the lover of the famous writer Oscar Wilde. In 1892, Wilde had a passionate relationship with the aristocratic and intelligent young poet Alfred Douglas, known as Bosie. In the prudish Victorian age, when homosexuality was banned, their affair led to the 'trial of the century'. Wilde took Bosie's father to court and brought on his own downfall. Wilde and Bosie's father died in 1900. Bosie's life then changed tack: he married, gambled away his fortune and became a Catholic. The documentary uses Bosie's poems and the evidence of e.g. Wilde's grandson and Bosie's great-nephew to portray a man who sacrificed his live for his father and eventually died a lonely man in 1945.
