Ten-part television series about forty years in an fictional rural community. The series focuses on the vicissitudes of one family in farming and one in the construction business. Both families are linked when the farmer's daughter marries the builder's son soon after war. Against the background of post-war reconstruction, economic growth and development of technology, media and transport, the series follows developments in the agricultural community and shows how the merciless maelstrom of time leaves its mark on the villages. Ladder of Years also looks at a long-lost world to which it is impossible to return: the world of the countryside.
