Much to his contentment, critics call Michel Houellebecq (1957) the most controversial modern French writer. Erik Lieshout, Arno Hagers and Reinier van Brummelen interviewed the successful writer and filmed him during the shooting of La possibilité d'une île, an adaptation of his latest book. Because Houellebecq considered himself ' sufficiently megalomaniac' to think he could do it, he directed the film himself. But this turned out to be harder than he thought and afterwards the author concluded that he was actually 'more attached to the book.' The documentary alternates concrete subjects with philosophical digressions about love, death and time. This results in a stylised visual portrait in which the writer talks, against the backdrop of 'post-apocalyptic' locations on Lanzarote and in Andalusia, about the subject matter of the film. The soundtrack includes seven songs Iggy Pop composed and recorded especially for the documentary.
