Goede man, lieve zoon

 (Good Husband, Dear Son)
Today, Ahatovici in Bosnia is a peaceful village. The houses have been rebuilt, flowers imbue the fields, gardens and doorsteps. Behind this charm, a savage past lies hidden. `There's not a single house in this village where someone wasn't murdered' a farmer says on a tour of the village. Eighty percent of the male villagers was slaughtered in the 1992 siege by the Serbs. The only reminders of the beloved husbands, sons, brothers, fathers and other relatives are some simple objects: a photograph, a watch (forever stuck to 15.06, the time of dying), some tools. A mother brings out a torn, but cleaned T-shirt. `Every time I see this shirt, I see my son.' Director Heddy Honigmann visited surviving relatives, asking them for the stories behind the woeful memories they keep.
