El Perro Negro - Stories From The Spanish Civil War

Since 1980, the Hungarian director Péter Forgács collects lost amateur footage of ordinary people and their day-to-day worries. With it, he made several prize-winning documentaries in which the daily life of yesteryear provides new insights in past periods. This is also the case in El Perro Negro, which shows the Spanish Civil War through the eyes of two Spanish amateur filmmakers in the thirties. Summer love, a marriage, births and outings all take place in front of the 8mm cameras of a Catalan factory worker and a romantic student from Madrid. In the background, meanwhile, a new Spain is emerging, climbing out of the deep pit of economic recession, ridden with social tension and headed, in a tearing rush, for an atrocious war.
