De zesde maestro (The Sixth Maestro)
In September 2004, Mariss Jansons took up his appointment as new chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. A remarkable event, as he is only the sixth maestro of an orchestra that has existed for over a century. In the documentary, Jansons is introduced to the Dutch audience. The film also examines to what extent he fits in the tradition of the orchestra. (Former) members of the Concertgebouw Orchestra look back on its history. Listening to various excerpts from the past, they explain how the orchestra was formed by its former conductors. For example, we hear that Mahler's Fourth Symphony was a completely different piece for Mengelberg than for Haitink. Back home in St. Petersburg, Mariss Jansons tells how he, growing up as a child in the wings of the opera in Riga, already dreamed of a career as a conductor.
