Evy (16) is in love with Nick (19). Both come from a well-to-do family, but Nick is a rebel who has a thorny relationship with his father. One day, Nick has dinner with Evy’s family and insults her father. The latter says he disapproves of their relationship and in the subsequent row he hits his daughter. Nick steals a car and the two young lovers run away to start a new life. They find their freedom aboard a deserted submarine, but Evy finds out the aggressive Nick is harbouring a secret.
The classic love story has a twist, because both Evy and Nick are deaf. This gives the incomprehension that young people encounter an extra turn.
The title refers to the highest of the low tones that Mick can still hear. Sound - and the lack of it - is an important character in the subtitled film, which is told from the deaf characters’ perspective. They communicate through sign language. The sound design of the film shows hearing people what it’s like to be deaf.
